Ninja Gaiden 4 Black arrives early through a recent public announcement

As promised, Microsoft unveiled a new, unannounced game during its Xbox Developer Direct on Thursday: Team Ninja has reintroduced Ninja Gaiden with its fourth main entry after a seven-year absence. In a surprise reveal, Ninja Gaiden 4 is being co-developed by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, developers of the Bayonetta franchise and Nier: Automata.

Next fall, 2025, Xbox Series X and Windows PC users will get Ninja Gaiden 4 as 2025 Game Pass members

The game will follow Ryu Hayabusa after Ninja Gaiden 3 as he fights demons and their Dark Dragon followers in an almost deserted Tokyo. Players will again assume the role of master ninja Ryu Hayabusa, in addition to a second, new protagonist: Yakumo represents a fresh master ninja who belongs to the Raven clan in competition with Ryu Hayabusa.

Yakumo will employ two play styles: Through Nué style gameplay, the ninja can fight several opponents with long-range moves. Team Ninja and PlatinumGames developers promise traditional Ninja Gaiden fighting actions will return to the game, leaving players to perform Inazuma Drops freely.

According to its developers, Ninja Gaiden 4 will stay faithful to its dark and challenging roots, as revealed during the Xbox Developer Direct event.

During Thursday’s Xbox Developer Direct, Team Ninja made multiple Ninja Gaiden updates, including the second announcement. After releasing Ninja Gaiden 2 Black without fanfare, Team Ninja created a visually enhanced version of the 2008 Ninja Gaiden 2 Xbox 360 game built on Unreal Engine 5. Black lets you fight as Ryu Hayabusa and offers Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel as playable characters.

You can get Ninja Gaiden 2 Black today on PS5, Windows, PC, and Xbox Series X.
